The eduction system is unmerciful. Once you lag behind, you will always be behind the pack. Unknowingly, the education system promotes elitism. Students in Singapore study harder and harder every year in national examinations as there is always competition for places in every schools. We may not realize that our education system breeds elitism but the fact it does. It's every parents pride and joy if their child gets a place in an elite school(such as Raffles Institution). This already shows that parents themselves helps to breed elitism.
I would like to back what Emotional guy had said, if a child gets into RI or HWA CHONG, the parents of the child would definately be over the moon, why? simply because his/her child have gotten into the BEST secondary school in singapore. Notice why the word 'best' is in caps, isn't RI just an ordinary school as compared to the others? well the answer is no, our education system have been shaped in such a way that being in a branded school is always better then some medicore school reason because these branded schools are known to consistently produce top scorers will other schools are just not able to. Thus it creates a mentality among parents that if their child manages to get into a branded school such as RI, it shows that thier child is no ordinary student but a genius. Having said that, this will then give parents of the child bragging rights that their child in RI and being typical singaporeans, the parent will go around telling people about the school thier child is in. As the parents do that, it SENDS FORTH a message to other parents/people that being in such schools is good and reputable this breeding elitism along the way. I hope after reading this and the previous comment and the more to come, it helps you realise that singapore education system is indeed sadly breeding elitism. -Timo
i totally agree that singapore education system is breeding elitism. even if we are taking the same paper, have the same marks, those from 'better' school will always have better chance then those from normal school. this will greatly pull the gaps of both parties.
well, firstly dun get the word wrong. breeding elitism. from what i've been reading here, "elitism" for some reason only refers to being nerdy. all the comments so far are about being good wif books full of boring words. however, we have not discussed the case of those who arent nerdy enough to catch up with the awfully nerdy. Singapore's educational system may be lauded to an extent for its idea of wholistic education. it is where students dont have to be elite nerds, but they can hone in their skills to other skills such as in sports perhaps. I would not say its perfect, but the idea is there. they just have to further think about the stress level.
Perhaps the mission of the education system here is to provide a comfortable pace of each individual learning capabilities or IQ and thus the need for streaming or banding, even for children as young as 12. But while doing so, it is breeding elitism.
Those who made it to the top group because they have a better IQ often find themselves hold special privileges and key appointments in the future.
Such example we can relate to is the army where most of the generals are actually SAF scholars and they were once the top of their school cohort. An average Joe in school could not even get the scholarship, not to mention the rank itself.
So for most of us who falls below the top few, whatever we might desire in life will be restricted. The education system is basically not fair as it favour only the best.
Personally i feel, singapore educational system is breeding elitism. Their education system is so well established that it cater to almost all groups of people and with benefits such as scholarships, it will bring out the best out of the cohort this already show us that it is breeding elitism. With such a vast range of education institute here it surely does bring out the elitist from diffrent acadamic areas.
I am utterly sadden to see the comment posted by Midhambr, it goes show that either you have not been reading the posts or you totally do not understand the true meaning of breeding elitism IN our education system. From what i read from your post, you claim that all the previous posts before you were associating elitism to being nerdy. Disclaimer: being nerdy doesn't make you smart, and you DO NOT have to be nerdy to be smart, many of those who get into good schools are smart by nature therefore you cannot conclude that being nerdy gets you into a good school. Now you go on to say that other students can "hone" their skills in sports and such, you may be slightly right on this point but you have to understand that the topic sentence is based on a WHOLE which means it focuses on every single student from kindergarten to university whereas the special group of students you are talking about makes up a small percentage of the whole student population therefore in my opinion it makes your point redundant. Another point in your comment u said that "we have not discussed the case of those who arent nerdy enough to catch up with the awfully nerdy". The topic here is to discuss HOW and WHY is our singapore education system breeding elitism and not to discuss about how other students are able to catch up with the cream of the crops. When we talk about mp3, apple comes to our mind and why apple and not creative or sony? The answer all lies in the branding and this is the main reason why the ipod is selling so well. The same concept applies to our education syestem here, (RI,HWA CHONG,NANYANG GIRLS) all these are labelled as 'branded' schools and a graduate from RAFFLES will most likely get a job over a graduate of same marks from another school the same reason as to why consumer will choose an ipod over a creative zen mp3 player. Why do the public look down on ITE students and look up at RI students? It is simply because our education system have been transformed and shaped into the current state where the name of your school is placed in higher piority over your grades. Is there any way to counter this problem? I would say no, our education have reached a point where there is literally no turning back and the only save solution now is to start studying smart from young and hopefully land yourself in a good school.
Nowaday,Singapore is important country which provide the best education for some asian countries. Also important for singapore economy because those student can provide singapore by serving back after finish their school.so singapore education should be run by an elite.
I agree that the Singapore educational system is breeding elitism.
I mean, not only is the education system breeding elitism for academic studies by so called "grading" schools by cut-off points for enrolment, however, not so long ago the Singapore Sports School was introduced to further enhance and build upon the abilities of promising athletes.
As Midhambr commented that Singapore is trying to achieve the idea of wholistic education. An education which breeds elitism no matter what field of education ranging form academics to even sports.
I totally agree that spore is breeding elitism. As you can see, being in those top schools will allow better job opportunities compared to being in neighborhood schools. Spore is set to look down on those students in ITE. Take my cousin for example. He went to SP after ITE and the lecturer commented that teaching those from ITE is a hassle as he find them its no use teaching as they wont understand the module. Isn't it unfair? Everyone deserves to study for knowledge is for everyone. In fact being in ITE is not bad at all as there were stories that people able to obtain a degree even going through the ITE path. Its just that different people have different learning capabilities. People always assumed when you are in a good school u have a secure future. therefore being in top schools are everything. its just up to the individual to study hard.
Darwinism dictates that the fittest will survive, and what better way to ensure survival than being kiasu?Evolutionary selection pressure has probably entrenched the behavior in social animals such as ourselves.
Rather than saying that the Singapore educational system is breeding elitism,it would be better to say that the whole world educational system is breeding elitism.Like timo said:"our education have reached a point where there is literally no turning back."So,what's the point to "complain"?
Do not try to change something that has become a fact, try to make some adjustment or change,it would be a more efficient and effective way.And please,do not think yourself are useless fellow and abandon yourself to vice.Don't take a negative attitude as it doesn't help u much.
I personally feel that YES Singapore's educational system is indeed breeding elitism.
I believe to many it is perfectly fine as this is how the society works. We just got to face it.
You have got the grades and the sort of 'BRANDED' schools that you have been as what timo said, i would say that your remaining career route is being paved out perfectly already.
The way Singapore's educational system works is that they provide every single pupil a place to study according to their learning pace as some maybe slow and some maybe fast.We can't possibly accomondate every pupil of different learning pace together as it will just eventually ruin their progress in school and therefore they are being streamed and put to different sort of pace of learning which contributes to what many people think it is and that is our educational system is breeding elitism.
I think that Singapore is doing a right job to focus and to excel in the education system. It is because it maintains a standard of education among young people - and the basic good written English as well as arithmetic skils are implented at the primary school level.
This is a good indication . Most Singaporeans are literate and the know how to read basic English and do simple sums. The government emphasized on proper education on every child . A parent can be put to jail if he does not let his child to study in school.
This means everyone are given the same opportunity to study and practice democracy.
With these, these results not only better graduates and researchers in each generation , but also leaders who can capably direct Singapore on the fast changing world stage.
I agree that Singapore's education system breeds elitism. Everywhere we go, those from top schools such as Hwa Chong Institution and RI(Raffles Institution) got better chance to get a better rank or better post at work. People look up those better schools, compared to normal schools. I agree with ali's point, which is those generals who got scholarships are from top schools. There are a lot.
There is no such thing as too late.Pursue your life and reach for success.
I don't agree with some of the comments..Schools like RI and Hwa Chong are only what people call 'branded' because of their past results and achievements..
anyway, for schlarships: lot's of scholarships now a days look out for attitude too. Also, even if they are not looking out for attitudes, they are looking for personal achievement and results. Therefore, it doesn't mean that other schools' pupils are disadvantaged in any way.
With everyone wanting to get into the 'elite schools', standards will be raised and everyone will do better and better.
